Signs
When It’s Time to Repipe
Low water pressure
Galvanized pipe narrows inside as it rusts, choking flow.
Rusty or discolored water
Brown water when a tap first opens points to corroding pipe.
Repeat leaks
Pinhole leaks and failing fittings that keep turning up in new places.
An older home
Original supply piping in many older homes is now well past its expected life.
Inside the house
Whole-House and Partial Repiping
Repiping replaces the supply lines that carry water to fixtures. Depending on the house, that may mean all of it or just the worst sections, such as the main runs in the basement.
- PEX or copper, chosen for the house and the job
- Planned routes to minimize wall and ceiling openings
- New shutoff valves at fixtures
- Water off for as little time as possible
- Permit and inspection

Outside the house
Water Service Line Replacement
The water service line runs from the curb stop near the street to the meter in your house. Under Ann Arbor’s ordinance, the property owner owns and maintains it from the curb stop to the building, whatever the cause of a failure.
The city’s 2025 water quality report lists no known lead service lines in its system. Many older lines are galvanized or copper that can still fail with age, leaks or ground movement. Replacement can be done by trench or, in the right conditions, by boring.

FAQ
Repiping Questions
How do I know what my pipes are made of?
Look where the water line comes into the basement and at exposed pipes. Galvanized steel is dull gray with threaded fittings; copper is reddish brown; PEX is plastic tubing, often red, blue or white. A plumber can confirm it.
PEX or copper?
Both are code-approved. PEX is flexible, needs fewer fittings, handles freezing better and usually costs less to install. Copper is long-proven and rigid. The best choice depends on the house and the job.
Who owns the water line to my house?
In Ann Arbor, the property owner owns and maintains the water service line from the curb stop to the building, under the city’s ordinance. Other utilities, such as YCUA in the Ypsilanti area, set their own rules.
Does Ann Arbor have lead water lines?
The City of Ann Arbor’s 2025 water quality report shows zero known lead service lines and none of unknown material. If you are outside the city’s system, ask your water utility.
How long does repiping take?
A partial repipe can be a day or two; a whole house usually takes longer, depending on size and access. Water is usually restored at the end of each day.
