Safety first

Smell Gas? Leave, Then Call

If you smell rotten eggs, hear hissing near a gas line or suspect a leak, don’t look for it yourself. Get everyone outside, don’t operate switches or anything that might spark, and call your gas utility’s emergency number or 911 from outside.

After the utility has made the home safe, we can find and repair the leaking pipe or connection and pressure test the system before it goes back into service.

Gas meter and piping

What we do

Gas Piping Work

Appliance lines

Gas ranges, dryers, water heaters, furnaces and fireplaces connected with the right fittings and shutoff valves.

Generators and tankless heaters

High-demand appliances often need gas piping sized up from the meter. We size the system for the total load.

Outdoor lines

Gas lines for grills, fire pits and pool heaters, buried or run to code.

Leak repair

Leaking fittings, valves and old flexible connectors found and replaced.

Pressure testing

New and repaired piping tested before it is put into service and inspected.

Permits

Gas piping work generally requires a permit and inspection; we take care of it.

FAQ

Gas Line Questions

Does a plumber install gas lines in Michigan?

Gas piping inside buildings is commonly installed by licensed plumbing or mechanical contractors, depending on the work and how the local code official classifies it. It requires a permit and inspection.

Do I need a permit for a new gas line?

In most communities, yes. Gas work is inspected because mistakes are dangerous. In Ann Arbor, permits are applied for through the city’s STREAM portal.

How do I know if my gas line is big enough for a new appliance?

Gas piping is sized for the total demand of every appliance on it and the length of the run. Adding a tankless water heater, generator or large range often means upsizing part of the line. We calculate it before installing.

Are old flexible gas connectors a problem?

Some very old uncoated brass connectors are known to fail and should be replaced. If an appliance connector looks old, kinked or corroded, have it replaced with a new, approved connector.
